Don Mueang was officially opened as a Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) base on March 27, 1914, although it had been in use earlier. It holds the distinction of being one of the world's oldest operating airports and Asia's oldest international airport. Commercial flights began in 1924, making it one of the earliest commercial airports globally.

Before the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2006, Don Mueang was the primary airport for Bangkok, known then as Bangkok International Airport. It operated under the IATA code BKK until this code was reassigned to Suvarnabhumi.

After its initial closure in 2006 and subsequent reopening in 2007, Don Mueang has evolved into one of the world's busiest airports for low-cost carriers. By 2025, it was handling millions of passengers annually, with a significant portion being international travelers.

Suvarnabhumi Airport was inaugurated on September 28, 2006, by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The opening was a significant milestone for Thailand, marking its entry into a new era of international air travel with one of Asia's most advanced airports.

Suvarnabhumi is the main hub for Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, and several other airlines, offering connections to over 90 destinations worldwide. It's a key transit point in Southeast Asia due to its central location and extensive flight network.
