The MRT system in Bangkok was first opened on July 3, 2004, with the Blue Line. This was a significant step towards alleviating the city's notorious traffic congestion, following the inception of the BTS Skytrain in 1999.

The MRT is managed by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), which oversees the construction and infrastructure, while the actual operation is handled by the Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) for the Blue and Purple Lines.

For safety, all MRT stations have platform screen doors, separating the platform from the tracks. Stations are equipped with elevators, escalators, and ramps to cater to all passengers, including those with disabilities.

There are ongoing and future plans to extend the existing lines and introduce new ones like the Orange, Brown, and Light Green Lines, aiming for a more comprehensive network that can handle Bangkok's growing population and urban expansion.
