The BTS Skytrain was inaugurated on December 5, 1999, by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It was the first electric mass transit railway system in Thailand, initially comprising two lines: the Sukhumvit Line and the Silom Line.
The system is operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC), a subsidiary of BTS Group Holdings, under a concession granted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
The BTS has a fleet of modern trains, with each train capable of carrying up to 1,000 passengers. More than 700 thousand passengers are using BTS each day.
